Torsdag 25. juni inviterer Melahuset til en litterær samtale med den indiske forfatteren Amitav Ghosh og hans nyeste bok Ghost-Eye, en magisk realistisk roman om klimaendringer og reinkarnasjon. På Melahuset møter Ghosh forfatter Ari Gautier til en samtale om historiefortelling, migrasjon, kulturelle møtepunkter og litteraturens evne til å bygge broer mellom ulike stemmer.

Varsha Gupta vil ha fisk til lunsj. Familien hennes kan ikke forstå det; treåringen har aldri smakt fisk i hele sitt liv. Gupta-familien er strenge vegetarianere og fisk er ikke tillatt inne i herskapshuset deres i Kolkata/ Calcutta. Men Varsha hevder at hun kan huske et annet liv, et leirhus ved en elv hvor hun fanget og kokte fisk med en annen mor.
Forvirret henvender Gupta-familien seg til Dr. Shoma Bose, en psykiater som har undersøkt det som er kjent som «tilfeller av reinkarnasjonstypen» i årevis. Men hennes forståelse av verden endres for alltid av Varshas avsløringer.

Om Amitav Ghosh:
Amitav Ghosh vokste opp i India, Bangladesh og Sri Lanka og har en doktorgrad i sosialantropologi fra University of Oxford. Han har skrevet fire sakprosabøker, to essaysamlinger og ni romaner. Bøkene hans har vunnet en rekke priser, og han har mottatt seks æresdoktorgrader. Verkene er oversatt til mer enn tretti språk, og han har sittet i juryen ved filmfestivalene i Locarno og Venezia. I 2018 ble han den første engelskspråklige forfatteren som mottok Indias høyeste litterære utmerkelse, Jnanpith-prisen. I 2024 ble han tildelt Erasmus-prisen og valgt inn i American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

“Past and present collide in a novel about a girl who might just be a “case of the reincarnation type.”
Varsha Gupta wants fish for her lunch. Her family can’t understand it; the three-year-old has never tasted fish in her life. The Guptas are strict vegetarians and don’t allow it inside their Calcutta mansion. But Varsha claims she can remember another life, a mud house by a river where she caught and cooked fish with a different mother.
Perplexed, the Guptas turn to Dr. Shoma Bose, a psychiatrist who has been investigating what are known as ‘cases of the reincarnation type’ for years. But her understanding of the world is changed forever by Varsha’s revelations.
Half a century later, Varsha’s therapeutic case file catches the attention of a group of environmental activists, and Shoma’s nephew Dinu is drawn inexorably into their plans. And as Dinu finds himself caught up in the search for Varsha, buried memories of his own past begin to surface.

About Amitav Ghosh
Amitav Ghosh grew up in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and has a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford. He is the author of four books of non-fiction, two collections of essays and nine novels. His books have won many prizes and he has received eight honorary degrees, six lifetime achievement awards and four honorary fellowships. His work has been translated into more than thirty languages and he has served on the Jury of the Locarno and Venice film festivals. In 2018 he became the first English-language writer to receive India’s highest literary honor, the Jnanpith Award. In 2019, Foreign Policy magazine named him one of the most important global thinkers of the preceding decade. In 2024 he was awarded the Erasmus Prize and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2025 he was awarded the Pak Kyongni Prize by South Korea’s Toji Foundation, and in 2026 he was given a Fellowship by the Guggenheim Foundation.
