Bogs & Bugs - Nocturnal Insect Discovery

We'll be setting up our ongoing insect monitoring project at Ponemah Bog in Amherst, NH to record all the insects & spiders we possibly can. We will have a special UV and/or Mercury Vapor Bulb setup in the bog preserve to understand the diversity of insects in NH's unique bog habitats. While we wait for the insects to come to the lights, we'll go out with UV flashlights to see what other invertebrates make their home in the acidic bogs.

By recording the species we find via the iNaturalist app, we'll be contributing to range and seasonality information to help build a database for meaningful conservation research and climate impact data. In unique habitats like this, there's always a chance of finding something new to science as well!

This is a guided event, and we'll be discussing the insects we find and sharing their stories with the group.

This is open to all ages. We'll be set up by 9pm, with expected peak activity around 11pm. Feel free to join us for all, or just part of the lighting. Jace will be doing short guided walks every 30 minutes or so.

The trails are short and easy, but we do walk on bog boards, so be sure to bring a flashlight so you can see where you're stepping.

There is a parking lot, although it's small and first-come-first-served. I highly recommend carpooling. To get to the bog, you have to drive through a residential neighborhood, so please drive slow and be respectful and quiet as you enter. I have special permits to be doing this work thanks to the NH Audubon, and we don't want that to be taken away. :)
