Bodies in Passage: A Curator Tour with Joleen Loh

Walk through "Singapore Stories: Pathways and Detours in Art", where we ask: what does it mean for a body to carry the traces of a place, space or a moment in time? Led by Curator Joleen Loh, this guided tour invites you to consider how bodies hold the traces of place, memory and time, shaped by social relations, marked by labour and lived experiences.
Through close and intimate encounters with portraiture and figurative landscapes in the DBS Singapore Galleries 1 and 2, we will uncover how the body registers time across Singapore’s rich layered histories. From John Turnbull Thomson’s depiction of colonial administration, where posture, dress and gesture signify authority and hierarchy to photographer Lim Kwong Ling’s mediation of the labouring body against Singapore’s burgeoning concrete landscape and Amanda Heng’s "Parts of My Body", each work opens a different pathway into understanding how the body is continually reinterpreted through shifting contexts. Together, we will discover how artists locate powerful forms of embodied resistance both in themselves and in those around them.
* Please note that this tour will take place after the Gallery’s opening hours.

About the Curator
Joleen Loh is a Curator at National Gallery Singapore, where she researches post-war and contemporary art from Singapore and Southeast Asia. She is part of the curatorial team overseeing the long-term display of Singapore art at the DBS Singapore Gallery. Her recent projects include "Fear No Power: Women Imagining Otherwise" (2026), "Kim Lim: The Space Between. A Retrospective" (2024), "Nothing is Forever: Rethinking Sculpture in Singapore" (2022), "Nervous City: Goh Beng Kwan" (2021), and "Suddenly Turning Visible: Art and Architecture in Southeast Asia (1969-89)" (2019).
