Canadian singer-songwriter Bobby Dove is releasing Fortune Teller the album on April 24th via New Motor Records/Warner ADA. Dove, a trans/non-binary artist originally hailing from Montreal, has worked their magic once again in the recording studio. Produced in Toronto by Aaron Goldstein (Cowboy Junkies, Kathleen Edwards), Fortune Teller is a cohesive album, weaving between honky tonk, blues and contemporary folk, as the soundtrack for Dove’s relatable, and sometimes haunting storytelling.
The title track, “Fortune Teller”, which has an official music video debuting on release, asks intangible questions from the position of being a storyteller and country artist, through the power of mystical symbols and archetypes. It also sets the tone for the album, with the muse coming forward on all tracks through rich sonic layers of pedal steel, electric and acoustic guitar, piano, and violin.
Leading up to the album launch, Bobby has put out singles “Not Much of an Outlaw”, “Trans Canadian Blues” and “Leaving Manitoba”, which have received international radio play and editorial playlisting from Amazon Music, bolstering their growing audience. The 12 track album (or 13 if fortune favors you) also contains such gems as “Did I Speak Too Soon”; a duet with Grammy-winning songwriter Jim Lauderdale, and “Dreamt I Met John Prine”; an upbeat but darkly existential romp through a dream Bobby had after the death of the famous artist.
Building from the success of their critically acclaimed 2021 album Hopeless Romantic, Bobby Dove has since toured Canada multiple times, as well as crossed the pond to tour select European countries. They’ve showcased at AmericanaFest, SXSW, and Folk Alliance, and given memorable performances at Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Dauphin’s Countryfest, and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, sharing stages with icons such as Mary Gauthier, Richard Thompson, and Ray Benson of Asleep at The Wheel.
