What do Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and a 16th-century madrigal have in common? This spring, Solaris brings them together in a program where world premieres meet Renaissance madrigals and jazz.Two world premieres by composer-in-residence James Stewart anchor the program. He's taken two songs from 1926 (Berlin's "Blue Skies" and Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me") and reimagined them for chorus in arrangements you will hear for the first time!
The program ventures into unexpected territory with Renaissance madrigals paired with jazzy reinterpretations. Thomas Weelkes's "Weep, O Mine Eyes" and Thomas Morley's "Fire, Fire" get call-and-response treatment alongside Bob Chilcott's jazz arrangements, featuring Nick Browne on bass and Andy Gagnon on drums, a conversation across four centuries.
Edvard Grieg's "Three Songs of Summer" and Charles Villiers Stanford's ethereal "The Blue Bird" offer shimmering contrast, alongside a lush arrangement of "Moonlight in Vermont."
