A Western Wednesday Event! Student discounts availableThe Western Washington University Zim-Marimba Ensemble was established in 2024 by graduate student Caden Davis. This ensemble, mostly made up of music majors, meets weekly to shake up the routine of studying mostly Western classical music and learn this high energy music, most of which originated in Zimbabwe. The instrumental ensemble type, formally known as the Kwanongoma Marimba (band), was introduced first in the 1960s in Zimbabwean music academia and was brought to the U.S. in the 1970's by Dumisani Maraire. Maraire started a movement that sparked decades of collaboration and community between Zimbabwean musicians and Americans who were moved by the music, which is the lineage of this very band at Western. We present arrangements taught to us by Zimbabweans, who encourage us to share their music for the joy of all people!
The Bellingham Community Marimba Project is a locally operated music education initiative directed by Caden Davis. BCMP brings community members from all walks of life together for weekly Zimbabwean marimba classes and supports music and cultural education-centered communities in Zimbabwe.
