Blue Light Sessions presents Brassica & Kimiko!

Rooted in the landscapes of British Columbia’s West Coast, Brassica is the latest creative chapter from Jonathan Sykes—multi-instrumentalist, educator, and lifelong student of sound. Raised on the unceded traditional territories of the Kwantlen, Semiahmoo, Katzie, and Tsawassen First Nations, Sykes grew up in a musical family and has been performing since childhood.

After years fronting rock and jazz bands, touring, and freelancing across genres—from metal to folk to classical—he now channels that wide-ranging experience into Brassica, a project gaining momentum in the Greater Vancouver scene following a handful of acclaimed shows.

This project started as a solo endeavour during COVID under the monikier j.syk, which is the artist name on the first release simply titled EP. Now, Sykes is joined as Brassica by multi-instrumentalist Andrew Koltek on bass, guitarist David Madani, and drummer Nathan Tromans. Their newest release, Variety Show, lives up to its name: an eclectic, heartfelt collection shaped by place, community, and lived experience. Confident yet unpretentious, Brassica invites listeners to discover music that feels both adventurous and deeply human.

Kimiko Dorey (she/her) is a Japanese Canadian singer from so-called Vancouver. Kimiko has been singing in some capacity for as along as she can remember. Her vocals are soulful and rich and she’s drawn to songs that tell a story and make you feel things. Kimiko takes a lot of joy in wearing a lot of different hats outside of music: educator, librarian, model, community organizer, fat activist, disability justice advocate, relationship anarchist, slow fashion nerd, and novice barista. She can often be found trying new restaurants and cafes or hiking at an impossibly slow pace with her two beloved pups.
