Blow Out (1981) at White Whale Bookstore
About this Event
This June, Windup Cinema pops up at White Whale Bookstore for the first in a series of summer film screenings.
Brian De Palma’s Blow Out, released 45 summers before John Travolta discovered berets, follows the tradition of voyeuristic films to expand upon Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up. Travolta is Jack Terry, a sound technician working on a sleazy slasher flick, tasked with sourcing ambient field noise (and the perfect scream). On assignment in a Philadelphia area park, he witnesses a car accident and records evidence pointing to a broader conspiracy.
Always the master stylist, suspense artist, and remixer of his chief influences, Blow Out finds De Palma in an especially bruising and cynical mode. As Travolta’s Terry burrows further into this paranoia and obsession in the face of American political corruption, De Palma takes his reconstruction of sound + image to its harrowing limit.
