Right now, the American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage, making it more important than ever for our upcoming blood drive to reach its goal of 25 units.The American Red Cross is facing a severe blood shortage as requests from hospitals exceed the available supply of blood, drawing down the blood supply by about 35% over the past month. Individuals are urgently needed to give blood now, so patients don’t face delays in lifesaving care.
Hospitals strained by the worst flu season in nearly 20 years are also having to ration critical blood products, while widespread flu activity is sidelining donors and slowing efforts to rebuild the national blood supply.
The Shortage is especially serious for types O, A negative and B negative blood. Donors with these blood types are encouraged to make a Power Red donation.
Severe winter weather is disrupting blood collections, with hundreds of drives canceled or delayed, thousands of donations going uncollected, and hazardous conditions making it harder to deliver critical blood products to hospitals.
