Saving lives: Blood transfusions are essential for treating patients who have lost blood due to surgery, trauma, or other injuries. Blood transfusions are also important for cancer patients who may not be able to produce enough platelets to stop bleeding. A single blood donation can save up to three lives.
Meeting patient needs: Blood is vital for life, and there's no other way to produce it, so it's important to have a sufficient supply. In the U.S., someone needs blood every two seconds, but only 3% of eligible people donate each year.
Treating rare conditions: Blood donation can be therapeutic for people with rare conditions like polycythemia vera and hereditary hemochromatosis.
Providing a mini-physical: Donating blood can provide a free mini-physical that can detect problems that could indicate an underlying medical condition.
Diversity of blood supply: A diverse blood supply is important because some people have rare blood types that fall outside the major A, B, AB, and O groups. Black or African American blood donors are especially important for patients who need blood from someone with a similar race or ethnicity.
