About this Event
Blogging Workshop 16.00-17.00: In this workshop we will look at how to adapt academic writing for public audiences, how to produce an effective blog post and how blogging may lead to alt-ac careers.
Guest Lecture 17.00-18.00: Who’s Afraid? Fear, Fairy Tales, Children’s Literature, and Concepts of Childhood. And Three Pigs.
For more than a century, folk and fairy tales have been, in J. R. R. Tolkien’s phrase, ‘relegated to the nursery’, not because they were appropriate for children, but because they were no longer of interest to adults. They have consequently had an anomalous position in children’s literature: on the one hand they are considered canonical and culturally (not to say mystically) important; on the other hand they have been freely adapted to suit current ideas of what is suitable for children (or profitable for their perpetrators). They therefore provide a revealing mirror of how society sees and defines childhood. An examination of how familiar texts, such as ‘The Three Little Pigs’, have fared, reveals some unexpected aspects of the power relationship between adult writers and child readers, at different cultural moments.
