The technique of printmaking is said to have originated in China dating back to 220 AD and was originally used to create patterns on fabric. Block printing is the art of transferring beautiful, artistic patterns carved on handmade wooden blocks onto fabric or paper. These patterns are usually inspired by nature, birds, animals, and popular motifs from around the world.
Students will create their design/drawing by either free-handing, tracing, or a combination of the two and carve them out of a rubber block (much easier than wood) to create a stamp of sorts. Each participant will pull 4 prints using a variety of papers and inks. This is a great technique for making stationary and holiday cards and students will have the option to purchase blank notecards and envelopes.
Participants must bring a reference image that is in a 4"x6" format or email to [email protected] prior to the workshop. We recommend beginners start with images that are more graphic instead of realistic. If you choose a more realistic image then the instructor will walk through the process of simplifying your design to fit into the time allotted for the workshop.
The class will be led by artist and printmaker, Abreeza Thomas on Saturday, September 20th from 12 pm to 3 pm.
Want to take your block print a step further, add on the Reduction Print class directly afterwards from 3pm-5pm. You'll learn how to add another layer of details and do a second print in a different color. The add-on can be purchased for $50 at check out.
Outside food and drink are allowed.
This class sells out months in advance, so be sure to book your spot early!
