Before he stunned the cinematic world with the epic series The Decalogue and the Three Colors trilogy, the great Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieślowski made his first work of metaphysical genius, Blind Chance, a compelling drama about the difficulty of reconciling political ideals with personal happiness. This unforgettable film follows Witek (the magnetic Bogusław Linda), a medical student with an uncertain future in Communist Poland; Kieślowski dramatizes Witek’s journey as a series of different possibilities, suggesting that chance rules our lives as much as choice does. First suppressed and then censored by the Polish government, Blind Chance is here presented in its complete original form.
"I chose Blind Chance for the way it exemplifies the more political, pre-Dekalog and Three Colours Blue Kieślowski: as he untangles his trademark themes of morality, luck, fate, and faith in the possible lives of the medical student Witek, both filmmaker and protagonist must grapple with and grate against the strictures of the communist Polish state. With Blind Chance, Kieślowski contends that it is a Sisyphian task to try to shape one’s own destiny, particularly when faced with an oppressive government, and the quest for satisfaction with the past and present is an elusive fantasy that nonetheless fuels our souls. Ausma Palmer is a writer based in Brooklyn. She is currently earning her M.A. at the CUNY Graduate Center, where her studies focus on cultural memory and cinema & literature of the Soviet and post-Soviet eras.
