Friday, Oct. 4, 2023, marks the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, the environment, the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago, and our Mount Alverna Village. To commemorate this observance, Mount Alverna Village will host an outdoor pet blessings for furry, feathery, fluffy, slimy and spikey friends of all shapes and sizes.Join us at 11am outside of the Main Entrance, near the statue of St. Francis for special prayers and a blessing for you pet. Our residents will join us in prayer and thanksgiving for all of God’s wonderful creatures.
This custom is conducted in remembrance of Saint Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. In fact, St. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, a hymn in which he invites all his brother and sister creatures—whether minerals, plants or animals—to praise their Creator. These creatures include “Brother Sun” and “Sister Moon,” “Brother Fire” and “Sister Water,” as well as “Sister Earth our Mother,” with all her various fruits and colored flowers.
**Just a reminder you pet is welcome to join you for personal visits with your loved one inside the facility. We ask that all pets that accompany you to the resident floors are well trained and that a copy of their current vaccinations be given to the receptionist to be placed on file**
