About this Event
Welcome to our Black Poplar Ecology, Talk and Planting session at Cody Dock!
Native black poplar, probably the largest and quickest growing native tree in the UK is now a tree critically in decline in the landscape. Historically widespread in the landscape and considered a high value timber tree used for making waggon wheels, floorboards and clogs now often just considered useful for the production of matchsticks.
Threatened by changes to its landscape, persecution and genetic hybridisation there is now only one site that this tree reproduces sexually. In a survey in 2003, there were just 7,000 mature black poplars left; of these, just 700 are female. Will this tree have a future in the UK or will its survival rely on human intervention?
During this workshop, we will have a discussion led by Young Arboricultural Professional of the Year Marcelo White on whether this species has a future in the wild in the UK, as well as current efforts to save this tree. We'll finish off the day by planting two specimens in the Cody Dock industrial site! Join us for all things Black Poplar.
Please bring weather appropriate clothes and shoes, a reusuable water bottle or coffee cup, and a packed lunch or money for the onsite cafe.
