Rethinking Wellness: Black Longevity — A Film Screening & Conversation at the Strand Theatre
What does it mean to live long — and live well?
Join us at the historic Strand Theatre in Oak Bluffs for an evening of film, reflection, and community on Martha's Vineyard, centered on the NAACP Image Award–nominated short documentary Black Longevity.
About the film
Black Longevity follows a remarkable group of Black elders — including a centenarian — as they embrace the fullness of their lives, sharing the daily rituals, relationships, and communities that sustain them. Directed by Geneva Peschka and executive produced by WellWithAll, the film premiered at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival and won Best Short Documentary at the Boston Film Festival. It is currently nominated for a 57th NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Short Form Documentary.
The conversation
Following the screening, we'll hear from:
Demond Martin, co-founder and CEO of WellWithAll, a Black-owned health and wellness company built on the belief that health is a human right, and executive producer of Black Longevity.
Dr. Henry Louis "Skip" Gates, Jr., Emmy and Peabody Award–winning filmmaker, literary scholar, Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard, and host of PBS's Finding Your Roots.
Together they'll explore what Black longevity asks of all of us — as families, as neighbors, and as communities.
About your hosts
This evening is presented by Westside Community Services, a San Francisco community behavioral health organization that has walked alongside its neighbors for more than five decades, in partnership with GBH.
