Join the John Brown House Museum, a Rhode Island Historical Society museum, on Saturday, February 21st at 11:00 am for our Black History on Providence’s East Side walking tour.
Celebrating Black History Month, we will be collaborating with Stages of Freedom for a special edition of the tour. Guests can expect to end the tour at the Stages of Freedom Bookstore (20 Westminster St, Providence, RI 02903) to learn more about the organization and their Lippitt Hill community project.
The tour itself will explore the past of Providence’s East Side Black communities that fought gentrification and enslavement. Delve into history as we shed light on racial tensions, community resistance, and how Providence’s diverse demographics were shaped. From the historic neighborhoods to the legacies of struggle and resilience, this journey illuminates Providence’s Black history, honoring both the triumphs and challenges faced by its people.
The tour is about 75 minutes long, covering a distance of one mile over flat and downhill sidewalks. Comfortable walking shoes recommended!
Admission is $10 for RIHs members and $15 for GA. Guests can register here.
