Join us at St Germans Priory during Black History Month to explore Cornwall’s links to
the transatlantic trade in enslaved African people.
Through a fascinating programme of song and spoken word, talks, film and discussion, we
will be challenged to think more deeply about these aspects of our history and understand
how they continue to influence our lives today. Learn about the role of the Port Eliot estate in the trade and its abolition, hear and discuss perspectives from local heritage specialists and Black Voices Cornwall, and be moved by Somerset folk legend Reg Meuross, Gambian Kora master Suntou Susso and actor Karen Gledhill telling stories of the trade from across the region through song and spoken word.
Praise for "Stolen From God"
“If ever there was evidence that music can be used to speak truth to power … this album
will in time sit as testament to that” – FATEA
“Ambitious, often unsettling” – The Guardian
“A masterpiece … simply amazing musicianship” – Mike Harding
“***** “…both moves and challenges the listener” – Morning Star
About the film “To Whom Does This Belong?”
The short film “To Whom Does This Belong?” is a powerful exploration of Black Cornish History. The film features members from the global majority community as they handle documents and archival material related to Cornwall’s history and its links to the trade of enslaved African people. The film also features a haunting, melodic track by Cornwall-based folk singer and composer Angeline Morrison.
Created in collaboration with Black Voices Cornwall, Museum X & Cornwall Museums Partnership.
