As part of this year’s Black History celebrations, UNISON Manchester Branch (UNISON Inspire Black Members Forum) is hosting a special event to commemorate Black History, entitled HONOURING OUR COMMUNITIES: RESILIENCE AND DETERMINATION.
The event is being held at the West Indian Sports & Social Club, Westwood Street, Moss Side, Manchester M14 4SW on Wednesday, 30 September 2026 from 2pm to 6pm.
ALL WELCOME and you don’t have to be a trade union member to attend. Light refreshments.

Keynote Speaker: Reverend Clive Foster MBE, Independent Windrush Commissioner
Reverend Clive Foster MBE is the first Windrush Commissioner, providing independent challenge and oversight of the Government’s work to deliver justice for survivors of the Home Office Windrush Scandal, ensuring survivors’ voices are at the heart of this work, and advising the Government on measures to prevent future injustices.
The Commissioner’s recommendations have already led to changes in the compensation scheme, including prioritising claims and reviews from those aged 75+, compensation for pensions losses and immigration fees, advance compensation payments of up to 75% while cases are reviewed, and adjustments for wage inflation and long-term unemployment. The Commissioner’s three strategic priorities are Justice and Healing, Prevention and Legacy.
Keynote Speaker: Ionie Richards
Ionie Richards is a Black British writer, filmmaker and poet from London UK. She is also co-founder of Evewright Arts Foundation, set up in 2017 that seeks out and preserves Black British Stories through art and storytelling. In her writing her themes explores the economic, social and political underbelly of society speaking about the underclass, migration and giving voice to the dispossessed.
HERE I STAND
A Personal Journey Through the Windrush Legacy
Written, performed, produced and narrated by Ionie Richards, Here I Stand (2023) offers a deeply personal art film account of growing up as a descendant of parents from the Windrush Generation. Inspired by the powerful visuals of EVEWRIGHT’s art and sound installation, Tilbury Bridge Walkways of Memories, filmed on location at Tilbury Port, Essex.

SuAndi OBE, Hon. FRSL, is a Manchester-born performance poet, writer and arts curator of Nigerian heritage.
In 2023, she received the Manchester Culture Special Recognition Award.
Dance: Jet Black Dance Academy
Jet Black Dance Academy is a Manchester-based dance academy supporting children and young people through dance, creativity and performance.
