The Black History Book Club concludes its summer season with a discussion of Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston on Aug. 31.
First published in 1937, the novel follows Janie Crawford’s journey toward self-definition across love, loss, and independence in early 20th century Florida. Hurston’s use of regional dialect, folklore and interior reflection helped reshape American literature and positioned the book as a foundational text in Black and feminist literary traditions.
This free event begins at 5:30 p.m. at 1213 N. Central Ave., at Tampa’s Black History Museum. Participants are invited to gather for a community-centered conversation that reflects on the power of Black authors, lived experience and storytelling as a means of cultural preservation and shared understanding. Copies of the book are available through the Tampa Bay History Center Museum Store or online retailers.
