Sydenham Hill Wood is part of the largest surviving section of the ancient Great North Wood, which once stretched from Deptford to Selhurst. Today, it supports over 200 species of trees and plants, along with rare fungi, insects, birds, and woodland mammals.
Together with nearby Dulwich Wood, it forms the biggest remaining area of this historic woodland in Southwark. Located southeast of Dulwich Village, the conservation area provides one of the borough’s largest stretches of open green space.
The walk will include a short stop at the Horniman Museum cafe midway through. Toilets are available there.
This walk is being offered as part of the 'Reuniting Sydenham Hill Wood and Dulwich Wood' project, an initiative that brings together two ancient woodlands known locally as Dulwich Wood and Sydenham Wood, while delivering a host of physical improvements and community acitivities to this much-loved local resource and green space. The project is made possible by the support of a number of funders and community partners: The National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Dulwich Estate, Southwark Council, The Kusuma Trust, The John Horseman Trust, Black Girls Hike and Wanderers of Colour. This funding and these partnerships help to secure the future of the woods by bringing together the management of Sydenham Hill Wood and Dulwich Wood under London Wildlife Trust, and welcoming people from all backgrounds into the Woods.
Attending: Please only book a ticket if you’re sure you can attend. There is no waitlist for this event. If you book a ticket and your plans change, kindly cancel your ticket at least a few days in advance so others have a chance to join. It’s also really helpful to let the BGH WhatsApp community know so someone else can take your place. (You’ll find the join link in your confirmation email.) If the event sells out, do keep checking this page, as any cancelled tickets will be released back here.
Terrain: A mix of woodland trails and pavement paths, with some inclines and steps. Paths can be slippery and muddy in wet weather, so hiking boots with good ankle support are recommended.
What to bring: Water, light lunch/snacks, weather appropriate clothing, and supportive footwear suitable for walking for several hours.
Facilities: Toilets are available at the Horniman Museum cafe stop in the middle of the route.
Transport: Closest station is Sydenham Hill Station which is where the walk starts. We will end at West Dulwich Station.
Parking: This walk is not a circular route so please note the above start and end points. There is limited parking (16 spaces) available at Sydenham Hill Station and parking fees apply. On weekends, street parking in the area tends to be free. If you plan to drive, please leave plenty of time when looking for local parking.
