Although the Empire Windrush and the first major post-war arrivals remain a significant landmark in British history, migrants from across the British Empire were already travelling to, living and working in Britain long before 1948. As British subjects, men and women from the Caribbean, Africa, the Indian subcontinent and other parts of the Empire came to Britain to study, serve in the Armed Forces, pursue careers and seize new opportunities. These early migrants laid the foundations for the post-war Windrush Generation, making significant contributions to British society and helping to shape the diverse nation we know today.
