About this Event

Workshop Overview

Our March Workshop introduces students to the exciting world of intelligent robotics using Sphero BOLT robots. Participants will explore how robots can repeat actions, make decisions, and communicate with each other using programming concepts such as loops, conditionals, and infrared (IR) messaging.

Through a series of interactive challenges, students will program Sphero robots to draw geometric shapes, simulate real-world systems like traffic lights, and exchange signals with other robots. These activities help learners understand how modern robotic systems automate tasks, react to sensor data, and coordinate with other machines.

Students will also participate in collaborative projects such as autonomous maze navigation, light-seeking robots, and multi-robot coordination challenges. The workshop emphasizes problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork, giving students a hands-on opportunity to experience how robotics and programming power the technologies shaping our future.

This is a free workshop and an exciting opportunity for students to explore robotics, computational thinking, and innovation in a supportive and engaging environment.

Workshop Activity - Programming Intelligent Robots with Sphero

Students will program Sphero robots to repeat actions, respond to sensor input, and communicate with other robots using infrared signals.

Materials Required

Black Boys Code will provide all required materials. Just come ready to learn and innovate.

• Laptop or tablet with the Sphero EDU app installed
• Sphero BOLT robots
• Open floor space for robotics challenges and testing

Learning Outcomes

Understand Loops in Robotics
Students will learn how loops allow robots to repeat actions automatically, enabling tasks such as drawing shapes, scanning environments, and executing complex movement patterns.

Use Conditionals for Smart Decisions
Learners will program robots to react to sensor inputs using if/else logic, helping robots decide how to respond to collisions, light levels, or environmental conditions.

Combine Logic and Automation
Participants will integrate loops and conditionals to create adaptive robot behaviors, allowing robots to continuously monitor their environment and respond intelligently.

Explore Robot Communication
Students will use infrared (IR) messaging to enable robots to send signals and coordinate actions with other robots.

Develop Collaborative Robotics Projects
Through team challenges, learners will design and test creative robotics solutions such as robot races, cooperative missions, and real-world automation scenarios.
