The Black Beacon 50-mile route is an unforgettable traverse through the stunning landscapes of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) and the Black Mountains. Spanning 50 miles and boasting a cumulative ascent of 3750 meters on runnable trails, this adventure offers a generous 26-hour window to complete the journey.
Your expedition begins at 8 am on a Saturday in Pontneddfechen, located at the southern end of the Bannau Brycheiniog mountain range. The early stages lead you into "waterfall country," where you can enjoy exhilarating forest trail running and pass beneath the dramatic Sgwd Yr Eira Waterfall, setting the tone for the challenges ahead with ascents up Fan Llia and Fan Fawr.
Continuing through the iconic Bannau Brycheiniog, the route challenges your endurance with climbs up Corn Du, Pen y Fan, and Crybyn. These efforts reward you with a magnificent ridgetop run, offering sweeping views of the Welsh heartlands. A prolonged descent past Carn Pica then brings you to Talybont Reservoir, where you can take a well-earned pause at the mid-way checkpoint.
The adventure intensifies with the formidable climb of Tor Y Foel, which ushers you out of the Bannau and into the rugged Black Mountains. Here, further ascents over Mynydd Llangorse and Mynydd Troed build to the summit of Hay Bluff, providing breathtaking views over Hay on Wye and the finish line.
