A 1990 graduate of Watertown High School, Dr. Jess Edison has spent the last three decades serving at the intersection of military leadership and cutting-edge medicine. After leaving South Dakota to pursue his education at Creighton University, Jess began a distinguished 26-year active duty career in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, where he rose to become a national leader in rheumatology.
His journey has taken him from the halls of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to a combat support hospital in Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dr. Edisonโs career is defined by leading from the front, whether presiding over the Rheumatology Fellowship at Walter Reed or serving as a medical consultant for Congressional leaders and the White House Medical Unit.
Throughout his service, he has held pivotal senior leadership roles, including Deputy Commander for Clinical Services and Consultant to the Army Surgeon General from 2017 to 2021. In this latter role, his strategic leadership was instrumental in redefining the role of military rheumatology for the modern era.
Currently a Professor of Medicine and the Rheumatology Division Director at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD, Dr. Edison oversees the training of the next generation of military physicians and leads critical research into autoimmune diseases affecting U.S. service members. A dedicated educator and researcher, he has an extensive portfolio of peer-reviewed publications and research abstracts and has led national efforts to develop clinical practice guidelines for osteoarthritis. Despite his global travels and numerous military honors, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, he remains a proud Watertown native who credits his South Dakota upbringing for the foundation of his service-driven career. His ties to the community remain strong, as his parents, David and Corolyn Edison, and his daughter, Lindsay Stangl and her husband Brandon, all call Watertown home.
