There are about 20 different birds of prey in our area. Not only do they hunt for food, eat meat, have sharp hooked beaks and fly exceptionally well, they also share a very distinctive characteristic: They K*ll with their feet! Most are called raptors, from the Latin raptare, meaning “to seize”. Learn all about our local raptors, including special sections on eagles, falcons, hawks and more!Nelson Mongiovi is an avid local birder and teaches birding courses at Gulf Coast State College. He will also soon be teaching at the St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve later this fall.
He is the administrator of the “Birding Port St. Joe” Facebook Group where he posts “snack-able” and fun content designed to educate and entertain folks who love birds. He stays continuously enrolled with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and submits local data daily to eBird, a citizen-based scientific group and one of the world’s largest biodiversity projects. He is a local shorebird volunteer, a Cornell Lab
Nestwatch monitor, and an active participant in Audubon’s EagleWatch program in Gulf County.
Nelson will hang out with just about anyone who wants to talk about birds or gardening, and he loves to share the gift of birding with his laid back, easy-to-understand and humorous style.
