Growing up in New York state I was fascinated by the birds that came to our bird feeders in the winter. It was not until I was 40 years old did I realize one could intentionally go looking for birds. Since that time I have seen birds on all continents except Antarctica. As well as searching out birds in the field I am interested in photography and bird conservation. I have been monitoring a Purple Martin colony in Santa Barbara County California for ten years, and serve as the compiler for the Santa Barbara Christmas Bird Count. In 2015 I undertook a Green Big Year in Santa Barbara county, California – I saw 285 species and biked over 4400 miles. In 2005 our family moved to New Zealand, where we lived for several years. We presently spend part of each year in California, Utah, and New Zealand.
My talk will explore some of the unique birds in New Zealand, how they came to be, and the innovative conservation strategies being used to keep them alive.
