About this Event

Birding for Beginners

with Ben Bafaloukos

ON-SITE | Tuesday, March 4 | 9 - 10:30am

Blue Ridge Naturalist - Elective

Join us on this birding walk around the NC Arboretum gardens and trails in search of a very common year round resident of North Carolina: Carolina wren. We will take an in-depth look at these noisy and “mousey” birds to observe their behaviors while also looking for other common winter bird species in our area. Bring your own binoculars but if you do not have a pair we have some loaner binoculars available to use during the program.

This program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time.

Ben Bafaloukos was born and raised outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, then moved to North Carolina to earn his B.S. in Environmental Sciences at NC State University. After graduating in 2020, Ben spent a year researching and writing interpretive signage in West Virginia before moving to Asheville to work as an environmental educator. Ben is an avid birdwatcher who loves to share his knowledge and passion with others, and he eagerly shares his wildlife observations through community science initiatives like iNaturalist and eBird. In his free time, Ben enjoys creating art, photographing wildlife (especially birds and bugs), and writing.
