Meet at Semiahmoo County Park parking lot.
A week into April we can be fairly sure that the spring influx of migrant species will be under way. Early spring is a special experience at Semiahmoo as, even though migration is taking off, most wintering waterfowl species are still present while migrant passerines are already moving north.
On an April 1, 2017, field trip we located fifty species of birds on and around the spit between 9:00 am and 12:30 pm. These included a flock of snow geese flying overhead and about 70 brant on the bay, eleven species of ducks including black scoters and Barrow’s goldeneyes, three species of loons and three of grebes, five species of shorebirds, five of gulls, a Caspian turn, belted kingfisher, northern flicker and Bewick’s wren among others. Also found were seven members of the sparrow family including spotted towhees and several dark-eyed juncos. House sparrows, of course, were counted separately. We also spotted a rufous hummingbird but not Anna’s.
Can we do as well this April? I would guess not quite; but let’s hope for the best. Things have changed over the past decade. Please join a group of dedicated birders from old and experienced to new and curious. We will see how close we can get to fifty species. Hopefully, the weather will be bright and promising. But be prepared in case it isn’t. Our plan will be to walk about three miles from the park to Tongue Point and return. See you there.
