Winter at Semiahmoo makes for exciting birding but it is always a thrill to be looking forward to the changes that spring brings to the spit and shorelines of Drayton Harbor. Though there will still plenty of avian activity on the marine bird habitats, and we will not neglect these, it is always a joy to look forward to the arrival of migrant songbirds and other summer residents, both on the spit and in adjacent wooded shores.
So after checking for waterfowl, resident songbirds and arriving migrants along the spit, a walk along the harbor shore should provide the opportunity locate returning summer residents such as Rufous Hummingbirds, Western Flycatchers, Wilson’s and Yellow Warblers, Common Yellowthroats, Black-headed Grosbeaks, several species of sparrows and also several different swallows overhead. Residents such as Bewick’s Wrens and White-crowned Sparrows should be singing on their territories and American Goldfinches adding their music overhead. We can expect to find about forty species.
Whether you are new to birding or a long-time birder please join us. You will enjoy the birds as well as the company. Our walk of two to three miles should be a rewarding experience.
