Métis singer-songwriter BirdBelly and folk-rock artist Mallory Chipman join forces at the legendary King Eddy on February 6.About BirdBelly:
BirdBelly is the new moniker of Alberta-born Métis singer-songwriter Cynthia Hamar — a name that marks a bold creative shift into deeper, more cinematic territory. Praised as “menacing, powerful, and contemplative” (Music Arena GH, 2022), her music blends raw emotion with richly textured folk-Americana, steeped in story and spirit.
Hamar has released four studio albums, including Joint & Marrow (Neon Moon Records), which charted on earshot!’s National Top 50 and earned her a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for Indigenous Songwriter of the Year. Now recording and performing as BirdBelly, her latest release The Wind The Wood has begun building national momentum, landing on CBC provincial playlists and the national campus radio charts.
Rooted in authenticity, resilience, and the wild grace of the prairie landscape, BirdBelly’s songs carry both tenderness and ferocity — music that feels lived-in, hard-won, and offered with an open hand.
About Mallory Chipman:
Hailing from the Canadian prairies, Mallory Chipman is a true musical polymath. An award-winning musician as well as a songwriter, producer, and music scholar, Chipman is celebrated for her acrobatic voice and the way she powerfully weaves truth and story into song. With influences from across genres, Mallory Chipman's signature sound has been described as "the finest folk-rock currently being made" (Amplify Magazine).
Her 2024 album, Songs to a Wild God, hit #1 on CKUA, #5 on the Folk Alliance International Charts, and has been featured on NPR and SiriusXM Radio, and her brand new EP the time is set to reach the same heights. Over the course of her five album career, Chipman has toured extensively and internationally, opening for artists including Jann Arden and Madeleine Peyroux. While reflecting contemporary themes, the quality of Chipman’s craft “places her amidst the longer tradition of the great singer-songwriters” (Americana UK) and has been described as "a masterclass in innovation and creativity" (Certified Bop), establishing her as an instant classic in the Canadian folk music scene.
Mallory Chipman is currently nominated for Solo Artist of the Year at the 2026 Canadian Folk Music Awards.
