Watch for water birds, song birds and more in one of three special guided bird walks led by Santa Barbara Audubon Society’s bird walk coordinator Karl Weis. Lake Los Carneros is one of Goleta’s premier birding hot spots due to its 25 acre lake and varied wooded and grassland habitats. Comfortable shoes, water and a snack are encouraged. Binoculars are a must (limited sets available to borrow). Spotting scopes are useful, if you have one.
Registration required; space is limited
Location:
Lake Los Carneros in Goleta
Park in the lot adjacent to Santa Barbara County Fire Station 14 and Goleta Valley Historical Society (Stow House). Meet in the parking lot behind the fire station.
Bird Watching Etiquette:
- Stay with the group to maximize your chances of seeing birds, and don't go ahead of the leader.
- If you look through a shared scope, move to the side once you've had a good look to make room for others.
- Keep noise levels down. Some quiet conversation is fine, but loud talking is a deterrent for the birds.
- Practice describing locations clearly. One method is to imagine the center of a tree or shrub as the middle of a clock. You might say, “The bird is at your 2 o’clock, 6 inches from the outer edge.”
- Don’t be shy: If you spot something which has not been mentioned, speak up. The trip leader will not always see every bird around and your observations are always welcome.
- Have fun!
