BIRD WATCHING AND EBIRD MAPPING AT MAYLANDS FORESHORE RESERVE AND CLARKSON RESERVE, MAYLANDS WITH RACHEL & MIKE GREEN
This is the second in a series of three guided bird walks and will focus on river and wetland birds. It will centre on Maylands Foreshore Reserve and part of Clarkson Reserve in
Maylands. The reserves are part of an interconnected series of parklands and wetlands along the picturesque Swan River with an exciting variety of bird habitats.
This is a longer walk than the first event and includes walking on both grassy banks and flat sealed paths for around a kilometre, but we will be walking slowly and stopping frequently. Some birds will be easy to see and identify, such as Pelicans, Magpie Larks and Little Black Cormorants. There are also less common wetland birds here including the Little Grassbird, which Rachel and Mike may be able to help you find, and the Buff-banded Rail. A leucistic magpie has also been seen here.
So far, around 40 species have been recorded at the Foreshore Reserve, including the White-faced Heron, Pied Stilt, Osprey, Little Egret and Caspian tern. However, it is a relatively new addition to eBird and there will be plenty more bird observations to add. Clarkson Reserve has been on eBird longer and 61 species were mapped here in 2025.
At the start of the walk Rachel and Mike will give you a list of birds that have previously been seen in the Foreshore reserve to help you identify them, and they will provide hands-on ID help throughout.
At the end of the walk the group will return to the starting point and add the birds seen to eBird. There will be a step-by-step explanation of how to do this for beginners, and more advanced steps for those who have already begun using it. Visual displays of the key steps and a take-home handout will be provided.
eBird [https://ebird.org/home] is a free Citizen Science project which encourages the ongoing mapping of birds across Bayswater and beyond. Using it requires little effort or cost and is free for all to access. It can be used to find the best bird-watching sites wherever you travel.
Leading this exciting exploration of our Bayswater birds, reserves and eBird mapping will be our popular and passionate tag-team of bird ID experts and presenters, Rachel and Mike Green. We will also be joined by members of the Friends of Maylands Samphires.
This is the second in a series of bird walks with Rachel and Mike.
The first will be held on April 11 at Browns Lake Reserve, Bedford [https://events.humanitix.com/bird-id-walk-1] and the third will be held at Arbor Park on June 20 [https://events.humanitix.com/bird-id-walk-3]. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS SESSION - PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING
Time: Start at 9am. Finish at 11am at the latest.
Meet at: Maylands Foreshore Reserve. Meet at the sheltered tables near the edge of Clarkson Road, opposite Tourer Court. We will start and finish the walk here.
Parking: Maylands Foreshore Reserve car park, Boat Ramp Road, off Clarkson Road. Car park is immediately on the left as you drive in towards the boat ramp car park.
Public transport: There is a bus stop 29000 immediately next to the car park for bus routes 42 and 43. (Bus timetable 103.)
Facilities: Toilets in Maylands Foreshore Reserve and in Clarkson Reserve (and when open in the Water Spray Park / Waterlands half-way between).
Seating: Occasional seats are scattered throughout both reserves and a group of seats with shelters and tables are at the start and end of the walk. You may like to bring your own chair.
What to bring: Binoculars. Chair, water, pen and paper, mozzie repellent. If you wish to log directly into eBird at the reserve bring an iPad or smart phone with internet connection. This is an outdoor event so please note the weather conditions and bring a hat and other appropriate items.
Preparation: Download eBird [https://ebird.org/home] onto your phone or iPad if you wish to log directly into it in the park. However, it is fine to wait and do it at home once you know how. If you have already begun using it bring any questions you have about mapping or finding the birds on it.
Level of difficulty and accessibility: We will be walking on grass which has a slope at Maylands Foreshore and on a concrete path and grass in Clarkson Reserve. There is a shared pathway through Clarkson Reserve. This can be popular with cyclists and ebike/escooter riders making it unsuitable for birdwatching on a busy day. However, if people have mobility issues they are welcome to choose a place to simply sit and bird watch. Birds can be seen from most vantage points and people can choose what suits their level of physical mobility.
Ideal for: Beginners to advanced bird-watchers, plus those who are keen to get to know their reserves better or who want to polish up their wetland bird identification or eBirdskills. Suitable for age 12 and above. (All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.)
This workshop is proudly brought to you by Enviro House [http://www.envirohouse.org.au/] and the City of Bayswater [https://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au/]
