Biodiversity Skills - Woodland & Freshwater (Certified)

This practical course explores a range of engaging biodiversity fieldwork experiences, from methodology and site selection to risk assessment, data collection, sampling strategies, and recording techniques. It supports formal fieldwork, alongside the benefits of a more exploration / observation theme.

Participants will develop practical confidence in using fieldwork equipment, identifying species, and structuring outdoor investigations that connect people with nature and enhance understanding of woodland ecosystems.

In woodland habitats, we will explore the differences between coniferous and deciduous woodlands, comparing species diversity, microclimates, and habitats. We will also introduce simple approaches for exploring freshwater habitats, including kick sampling and invertebrate identification.

This workshop is designed to empower educators to increase their confidence in exploring and interpreting the natural world, enhancing participant engagement through real-world investigation and connection to place. It is suitable for educators, outdoor leaders, youth workers, volunteers, and others working or volunteering in education or community learning. It is for adults only.
