About the Band - Bim Skala Bim
Bim Skala Bim formed in Boston, MA as a Ska Rock band that was influenced by the bands in England’s 2 Tone movement, as well as the Clash, UB40 and Bob Marley. Bim’s infectious Boston Blue Beat sound led them to be one of the premier bands kick-starting the Third Wave of Ska in the 1980s. More bands quickly followed their example resulting in a lively scene in Boston and much of the United States. When the band Bim Skala Bim first appeared in 1983, Boston didn’t have much of a ska scene. They worked hard over the years to make sure there was one. Bim Skala Bim has also been a remarkably stable band: All seven of the band’s original members have remained in the picture over the years.
Unlike most of their peers and predecessors, Bim developed a catholic approach to the stylized form of music they loved. They aligned with Boston’s punk bands, incorporated secret-agent themes and versioned songs by classic rock acts like Cream, Pink Floyd and Neil Young into their repertoire. They were as likely to dabble in calypso or New Orleans music as ska and reggae. The band’s 1986 self-titled debut album landed them on the cover of College Media Journal, the radio tipsheet that was highly influential at the time. That set the pace. Over the next 15 years they won a bushel of Boston Music Awards, toured with original and second- wave ska luminaries, and mentored the next generation of ska enthusiasts, including the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. In 2013 Bim made an album called “Chet’s Last Call,” paying tribute to the defunct second-floor hole-in-the-wall above Causeway Street, where the band played its first-ever gig. The band released its 12th album, “Sonic Tonic,” in 2021, but the pandemic prevented any touring promotion. There’s still a lot of love for Bim’s music among latter-day ska fanatics: Last year, the long-running, New Jersey-based ska label Stubborn Records released three out of five proposed albums, featuring 60 bands from around the World covering Bim songs, called Bim Bam Boom.
