Life has not been a smilefest for Tina. First as a baby she was cruely trained to do circus tricks, eventually ending up in the brain-atrophying monotony of zoo life, initially at San Diego Zoo, followed by 15 years at the Los Angeles Zoo, and last May being sent to her final destination at the horror show of Tulsa Zoo.
While here in Los Angeles, when the only other girl elephant, poor Shaunzi, was unalived by zoo officials, we started to advocate for her release to sanctuary along with the already decades-old call for freedom for Billy the lone boy.
LA Zoo director Denise Verret, being an administrator by training and trade, seems to only view the zoo's captives as listings on spread sheets. In deciding to get rid of Billy and Tina, she decided on another zoo instead of the healing haven of sanctuary: No empathy or compassion messes up her calculations. Zoos, which never have enough space or allow enough agency or enrichment for their big brains, are inherently bad enough for elephants, even when they arent lorded over by uncaring administrators. We are now demanding the City of Los Angeles makes the right, just, and humane decision never again to be party to holding elephants captive. All other forms of elephant ownership are already illegal in LA so it's not a big step to extend this prohibition to zoos on behalf of these wide-ranging and cognitively complex beings.
Join us in our final campaign for elephants at the Los Angeles Zoo.
