“Bike Vessel” is a 2023 documentary directed by Eric D. Seals that captures a transformative journey of health, resilience, and family bonding. The film follows Seals and his now 72-year-old father, Donnie, on a 350-mile cycling trip from St. Louis to Chicago. The journey is especially poignant considering Donnie's health struggles, which included three open-heart surgeries over 15 years that forced him into early retirement. His remarkable recovery began with a life-changing decision to embrace cycling and healthy living. According to the film maker, “‘Bike Vessel’ tells the story of a man defying health statistics and renewing his lease on life. The film takes a hard look at the health disparities plaguing Black men, and the systematic racism that has elevated them to the lowest life expectancy and highest death rate of any racial or ethnic group.”
