This Fall we have partnered with local professors to bring an all new season of of our Prof Picks Series to the big screen! Local professors and experts curate a film for the big screen, introduce the movie and then, after the film, they host a post movie Q&A in the theater! The Series kicks off on September 17th with a classic curated by Dr. Thomas Powers, Assistant Professor of English at Montgomery County Community College. 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲: John Carpenter’s imaginative action adventure is a throwback to the movie serials of the past. Kurt Russell plays a hard-boiled delivery truck driver who must rescue his best friend’s fiancee from a sorcerer and crime boss under the streets of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Carpenter’s unique vision is perfectly encapsulated in this bizarre, fun camp classic.
𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿: Dr. Thomas Powers teaches English at Montgomery County Community College, where he has recently developed and taught a course on the graphic novel. He is also the author of Gender and the Quest in British Science-Fiction Television: An Analysis of Doctor Who, Blake’s 7, Red Dwarf and Torchwood (McFarland, 2016) and has composed numerous articles for the Eisner-Award-winning Back Issue! magazine, which specializes in Bronze Age comics history.
