“The Big Apple’s Creme de la Créme”
For over two decades, Big Lazy has flourished in New York City’s downtown music scene, performing their singular blend of noir and twang at iconic venues including Tonic, The Knitting Factory, Barbès, and The Museum of Modern Art. Simultaneously gothic and modern, noir and pastoral, their music conjures vivid imagery—from wide-open landscapes to shadowy back rooms—with cinematic clarity and restraint.
Big Lazy forges a distinctly American sound, drawing from rock, jazz, and the avant-garde without ever settling comfortably into one lane.
Founder Stephen Ulrich is also an accomplished composer for film and radio. His work includes the HBO series Bored to Death, the documentary Art and Craft, and 30 commissioned pieces for This American Life. In 2023, Barbès Records released Music from This American Life, compiling Ulrich’s compositions for the program.
“Big Lazy, the elegantly gritty instrumental trio led by the extraordinary guitarist Stephen Ulrich, plays stunningly beautiful music that evokes everything from truckers’ romps to the haunting film scores of Bernard Herrmann.” — The New Yorker
Opening the evening is Andy Tolins , a veteran guitarist and vocalist who has been a central figure in the State College music community for over 30 years, best known as the leader of the Triple A Blues Band.
