Big Girls Don’t Cry, Paloma Schneideman’s debut film, takes us back to one long summer in Ōmaha in 2006 — complete with MSN Messenger, Nokia phones and dial-up internet. It’s a tender, messy and beautifully Kiwi coming-of-age story about girlhood, queer desire, friendship, shame and finding your way.
The film has already received plenty of positive attention both here and overseas, premiering at Sundance Film Festival and winning the Grand Prix at the Nouvelle Vague festival in Biarritz. The NZIFF describes the film as exploring sexuality, vulnerability and the heightened emotional world of youth. While critics have praised the film for capturing the challenges of growing up queer without much support. Ani Palmer has also been celebrated for her performance as Sid.
This movie night fundraiser is in support of Auckland Women's Centre's feminist mahi and your ticket contributes to a full year of LGBTQIA+ community education, connection and support.
With our current funding contract for our LGBTQ+ programmes ending with no replacement in sight, and increasing attacks on the rights and identities of rainbow, takatāpui and trans communities, safe and affirming spaces are more important than ever.
