Bible in the Wild: Faith Beyond Sunday Morning
You know how people talk about meeting someone "in the wild"? Not on an app, not at a singles mixer, not in a space already designed for that kind of connection, just out in the world, living your actual life, and there they are.
Bible in the Wild borrows that idea for faith community.
Our summer Bible study usually meets online through Google Meet, which is genuinely great for showing up from wherever you are. But there is something that virtual space cannot quite do. It cannot put you at a table with strangers. It cannot let someone at the next booth overhear your conversation and think, wait, that sounds different than what I thought Christianity was. It cannot give you a firepit, a cold drink, or the particular energy of talking honestly about scripture, justice, and faith in a place that was not built for it.
So this summer we are taking the conversation into the wild: restaurants, firepits, and local watering holes around the North Shore. The goal is simple. Show up, talk honestly, and see what happens when progressive, curious, justice-centered Christian conversation lands in ordinary public spaces.
The summer plan:
June 10, 6pm, The James in Essex: We start with ourselves. What lens do we bring to scripture before we even open it? What experiences, questions, and assumptions shape what we notice, resist, and carry with us?
July 1, 6–7:30pm, The Sacred Grove at WGTCC: Firepit gathering and potluck salad dinner. We will discuss Pretty: A Memoir by KB Brookins and explore the rights, dignity, and lived experiences of trans people and Black America through memoir, faith, and public witness. Marshmallow toasting included.
July 22, 6pm, Location TBD: Another local watering hole, another honest conversation. Details coming closer to the date.
August 12: Our host Katherine will be in Tulsa for seminary, but the group is warmly encouraged to pick a spot and show up anyway. She may video call in to say hello.
September 2, 6pm, Virtual or TBD: Our closing theme is hospitality, not just being polite, but what active, costly, faithful welcome actually looks like in scripture and in our lives. Format will follow what the group wants.
No preparation required for any session. No background assumed. People of all viewpoints and backgrounds are welcome.
Hosted by West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church, part of the Exploring the Bible Together summer series.
