BFI 'Rip it Up' - Quadrophenia + live music by newbuild

Part of the BFI's "Rip it Up" season, Theatreship is proud to host a series of screenings celebrating the changing face of youth rebellion. In this season we dive into the youth driven movements which have defined our cultural identity, the agonies and ecstasies of growing up in Britain, and the issues facing the next generation. For this event we are screening Quadrophenia, a visceral, music-fueled dive into a definitive era of Mod rebellion and teenage angst, followed by a live performance from newbuild, bringing their unique alt-rock electronic-infused sound.

Quadrophenia (1979) Set against the gritty backdrop of 1964 London, the definitive cult classic captures the explosive energy of teenage rebellion through the eyes of Jimmy, a disillusioned mailroom boy who finds identity and belonging in the sharply dressed, scooter-riding Mod subculture. Fueled by the legendary rock opera soundtrack by The Who, the film masterfully charts a turbulent journey of amphetamine-fueled weekends, fierce tribal rivalries with the leather-clad Rockers, and the ultimate, iconic clash on the beaches of Brighton, perfectly defining a generation's desperate search for meaning and authentic connection.
The film will be followed by a live performance from newbuild, a five-piece alt rock band, with jungle and electronic influences. Their sound blends 90s electronics, dream pop, and noise rock.
