Beyond The Traditional Path: Building a Career Through Action

A workshop for singers on building resilient, creative, and intentional careers in uncertain times.

This one-day workshop invites emerging classical singers to step back from the audition cycle and think seriously about how to build a sustainable, self-directed career. The morning session opens with an honest look at the current landscape: the supply-demand mismatch in classical performance, the limits of the traditional path, and the psychological trap of waiting to be chosen. From there, participants work through the five principles of effectuation (developed by Saras Sarasvathy), using their own skills, repertoire, networks, and interests as the raw material. Rather than planning toward a fixed goal, singers learn to start from where they are and build forward, identifying what they already have and what small experiments they could launch immediately.

The afternoon shifts from mindset to action. Working in small groups, participants design a non-traditional career path — a community residency, a cross-disciplinary collaboration, a niche teaching studio, or something entirely their own — using only assets they currently possess. The constraint is intentional: the project must be collaboratively structured, built on existing skills, and launchable within thirty days. Groups then apply the "affordable loss" lens to stress-test their ideas, asking not "what's the perfect plan?" but "what's the smallest version worth trying?" The session closes with each participant drafting a concrete seven-day action plan and naming the permission they've been waiting for that they don't actually need.

By the end of the day, singers leave with a clearer sense of their artistic inventory, one testable project concept, and a practical first step grounded in the same creative discipline they already bring to their work.
