Beyond the Score: a panel discussion on value in the coffee chain

What we define as "quality" within the specialty coffee industry is an ever changing concept. Last year, we transitioned from the traditional CQI scoring system to the Specialty Coffee Association’s new "Coffee Value Assessment" (CVA). But what does this transition actually mean for those of us on the ground? The change touches on how we trade, how we communicate, and offers us a chance to reflect on our responsibilities, needs and values.

We believe the most meaningful moments in such transitions happen in the friction and harmony of open conversation. This event is designed to break down the barrier between "expert" and "audience." Whether you are a veteran or a newbie Q-Grader, a green buyer, or a curious barista, your perspective is vital to shaping how this framework translates into our daily practice.

The Panelists

Edward Fischer: Anthropologist, writer of the book Making Better Coffee: How Maya Farmers and Third Wave Tastemakers Create Value, providing historical and conceptual context on how we value coffee.
Cerianne Bury (Trabocca): Offering a hands-on perspective from the world of green coffee trading.
Madeline Stuart: Agroecologist sharing her research on the vital link between regenerative farm management, shade-grown systems, and coffee quality.
