About this Event
SciArt Santa Fe, in partnership with Los Alamos MainStreet and Creative District, presents Beyond the Realms of Possibility, a LASER (Leonardo Art/Science Evening Rendezvous) panel bringing together artists and scientists representing a diverse range of perspectives to discuss possibility in the midst of uncertainty. This panel, moderated by Jaquelyn Connolly of Los Alamos MainStreet and Andrea Polli of SciArt Santa Fe is in conjunction with Into the Realms of Possibility, a group exhibition at the historic Fuller Lodge Gallery.
During World War II, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico was used for the secretive Manhattan Project,, featured in the movie Oppenheimer, which ultimately developed the world's first nuclear weapons.. Today, while still involved with national security, research performed at the lab also includes advancing scientific understanding around renewable energy and protecting people from outbreaks of deadly diseases.
Fuller Lodge, a part of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, a site with ancestral ruins dating back to the 13th century, was built as a school in 1928 using more than 700 Ponderosa pines harvested from the nearby forest. In 1942, the school and the surrounding land were purchased by the Manhattan Project for the top-secret effort to develop the first atomic bomb. The Fuller Lodge continues as an historic site and community center, hosting meetings and lectures. It is both a symbol of Los Alamos and a site of historic, artistic, and scientific significance.
SciArt Santa Fe, founded in 2019, fosters artists across disciplines that reflect the cultural diversity of New Mexico, supports research that addresses issues that disproportionately affect people of under-represented races, ethnicities, religions, genders, sexual orientations, national origins, citizenship statuses and ages including climate change, species extinction and migration, that often do not fit within a traditional gallery framework.
Los Alamos MainStreet and Creative District serves as a driver for the economic vitality of Los Alamos and White Rock. They empower the ecosystem of their local business community through education, promotion, catalytic projects, and strong support of our creative sector for a better quality of life for our community and region. As an award winning accredited MainStreet America program with over 30 years of experience, they leverage state economic development programs and funding with local resources to support the entrepreneurial, the creative and the business-minded members of their community.
