About this Event
Beyond The Music hosts an exclusive premier of 'The Truth' as part of it's opening night. The lost tapes of UK rap's origins, directed by Teddy Hygh, showcases the evolution of black music in the UK, in partnership with Unity Radio and Fully Focused.
Originally commissioned as part of ‘Home Grown’, The Story of UK Hip Hop Exhibition at Manchester’s Urbis Museum, the film documents four rich decades of Black British music, journeying into the scene’s unique sound through the eyes of the pioneers and legends who built it; from Saxon Sound, Rebel MC, Rodney P and Roots Manuva, Paul Ibiza, Congo Natty and MC Det, Mystic Matt, MC Creed, Heartless Crew and So Solid!’s Mega Man, to Skepta, Chip, Wretch 32, Ghetts and Giggs. Beyond The Music’s exclusive premiere will celebrate the first public screening of the film in 15 years.
Speaking about ‘The Truth’, director Teddy Nygh says: “The Truth, is a very important film within a trilogy of documentaries I’ve made about Black British music, and a very important
film within my life. It was an opportunity to bring together some of the biggest pioneers and legends I respect, look up to and grew up with, to try and shine a light on the true story behind a lot of the incredible music in today's scene.”
Taking place at Everyman, St John’s on 9th October, the premiere will be followed by an exclusive Q&A with Nygh, accompanied by stars of the film, Jungle and Garage legends Paul Ibiza, MC Creed, Mystic Matt and Heartless Crew.
‘The Truth’ premieres in partnership with Unity Radio, the original media partner of the film’s creation at Urbis back in 2009. Having learned D.I.Y radio to create original pirate material on the rooftops of East London’s Bethnal Green and Tower Hamlets with many of the pioneers documented in the film, Unity Radio later migrated North and set up firm roots; giving credence to Manchester’s airwaves and nurturing the city’s grass-roots talent to gain national recognition spanning over two decades.
Book early to avoid disappoinment.
