Beyond the Frame: Real-World Filmmaking with Justin Brunelle

How do you turn an unpredictable moment into a scene people care about? Join Edmonton filmmaker Justin Brunelle, founder and producer of Moving Artistry Productions Inc., for a behind-the-scenes look at filmmaking from remote expeditions to commercial sets. Presented by McBain Camera and Sony, this session follows the making of Wings of Survival, a feature-length expedition documentary tracking two endurance athletes across fifteen countries on a 30,000-kilometre journey from Alaska to Patagonia. Through film excerpts, behind-the-scenes footage and firsthand stories, Justin will share how he approaches the moments you can’t script, the conditions you can’t control and the decisions that shape a compelling story.
From operating solo in the wilderness to working with a full production crew, Justin will break down how he recognizes a scene, captures what the editor needs and how to choose the right camera and lens package around the story. Expect honest lessons from the field, a look at his working kit and practical examples of turning production challenges into creative opportunities. Designed for aspiring filmmakers, photographers exploring video and creators ready to pursue their own projects, this 45-minute presentation is about developing the skills and confidence to make something you care about. Join us at the McBain Creator Classroom or online, with time for questions afterward.
