About this Event

This event is part of the University of Southampton Winchester School of Art's Into the Fold event for 2026. Join James MacDonell from the Digital Scholarship Team at University of Southampton's Library Service on Beyond the fold: a hands-on introduction to 3D Scanning Art. 3D scanning is a tool that has been widely used in the GLAM (Galleries, Library, Archives and Museums) sector as a way to engage audiences with material they otherwise would be unable to access or as a archival tool to create an accurate record of an object that is at risk of degradation.

Recent developments in 3D scanning have made the technology increasingly accessible to a wider audience. Join us for a hands-on session looking at how these developments have impacted the process of 3D digitisation of artwork. In this session you’ll get an introduction to three methods of 3D digitisation: photogrammetry, structured light scanning and gaussian splatting, and have the opportunity to try these technologies out using the University of Southampton’s Artists’ Book Collection as a subject. Learn how artwork such as artist books can be preserved and shared in new and exciting forms.
