Many people view the Stonewall Riots as the beginning of queer activism, yet same-sex sexual activity was decriminalized in Canada one day prior on June 27, 1969. Despite this legal win, change was limited and 2SLGBTQAI+communities continued to face criminalization, surveillance, discrimination, and violence.
Fifty years later, the federal government marked the anniversary of decriminalization with national celebrations—but what did “decriminalization” actually mean, who fought for it, who was left out, and what were the ripple effects that came afterwards?
Join researcher and curator Kaschelle Thiessen for an engaging and thought-provoking look at the complicated history behind Canada’s partial decriminalization via Omnibus Bill C-150, and how it shaped life in British Columbia in the years that followed. Through stories, research, and fresh perspectives, this talk examines a pivotal moment in Canada’s queer history and challenges some of the myths surrounding it.
