n this lecture, Dr. Alavi, a Lompoc Health pediatrician, will describe how shame-based counseling negatively impacts pediatric health behaviors. In her presentation, Dr. Alavi will:
Distinguish between weight focused and health focused counseling approaches
Teach how to apply developmentally appropriate non-stigmatizing language when discussing nutrition and physical activity with children and adolescents
Inform how to navigate challenging conversations while preserving trust and motivation
Pediatrician Dr. Ayda Alavi sees patients at Lompoc Health – North Third Ceneter. She is a native of East Lansing, Mich. and earned a Bachelor of Science degree with high honors in Neuroscience from Michigan State University. She earned her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in 2022. Dr. Alavi completed her residency at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where she was Chief Resident. She joined Lompoc Health in August 2025.
